Sesame Street Unveils New Pride Month Character: Gabe the Giddy Groomer
From sunny days to shady nights: meet Sesame Street's newest LGBTQ+ icon.
In a bold leap forward for children's television, Sesame Street has introduced its newest character for Pride Month: Gabe the Giddy Groomer, a 6’5”, 230 lb. drag queen who struts onto the scene in fishnet stockings, a sequined corset, and a flowing beard that could make the Taliban jealous. With a Master's degree in Queer Theory from an unaccredited Brooklyn art collective, Gabe joins Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and Elmo to teach preschoolers about the intricacies of sexual orientation, transgenderism, gender ideology, drag, kink, and other LGBTQ+ topics. The move has been hailed as a groundbreaking triumph by progressive media and decried as “a glitter-dusted dumpster fire” by concerned parents.
In the season premiere, "G is for Genderqueer," Gabe sashays onto Sesame Street to host a “Gender Jamboree,” complete with a musical number titled “NOT Born This Way.” The episode features Gabe explaining non-binary pronouns to a visibly confused Elmo, who responds, “They/them scare Elmo, no tickles today!” Later, Gabe demonstrates a “kink-positive puppet pageant,” teaching kids how to accessorize with leather cuffs and feather boas while Oscar the Grouch grumbles, “Oh brother, this trash is worse than the contents of my garbage pail!”
The pièce de résistance, however, is Episode 427, where Gabe orchestrates a “Love Is Love” segment featuring Bert and Ernie in what can only be described as a risqué reinterpretation of their roommate dynamic. Clad in tasseled leather vests, jockstraps, and studded chokers, the duo joins Gabe for a skit about “open relationships” and drug-fueled sex parties. The scene ends with Big Bird joining in, and Bert commenting, "You certainly live up to your name!"
Mainstream media outlets have tripped over themselves to praise the bold move. The Washington Post gushed, “Gabe the Giddy Groomer is a stunning and brave addition to Sesame Street, teaching kids that love comes in all forms—especially studded and bedazzled ones.” Vanity Fair called the threesome episode “a revolutionary step toward dismantling heteronormative puppetry,” while Buzzfeed published a listicle titled “17 Reasons Gabe Is the Queer Icon Kids Need.” NPR declared Gabe “a shimmering paragon of boundary-pushing brilliance who teaches children not just how to count, but how to question everything — including their own biological reality.” The New York Times said, “This is the kind of radical educational courage we need: honest, unfiltered, and forced by giant investment firms like Blackrock."
Meanwhile, PBS dismissed conservative backlash as “hateful and bigoted,” with a spokesperson declaring, “We believe that toddlers deserve access to the full spectrum of adult discourse around gender identity, polyamory, and intersectional allyship — preferably before they can spell their own names.” When pressed further, PBS described concerns as “rooted in outdated concepts like ‘childhood innocence’ and ‘age-appropriate boundaries.’”
Critics, however, argue the show has crossed a line. The Family Values Alliance issued a statement saying, “We’re all for diversity, but teaching four-year-olds about BDSM gear and polyamory is like giving them a calculus textbook for nap time.” Social media erupted with memes of Cookie Monster puking a rainbow. One X post quipped, “First they made Bert and Ernie gay, now this. What’s next, Elmo in a ball gag?”
Despite the glowing reviews from certain corners, exposing young children to adult topics like sexuality and gender identity is widely understood as inappropriate. These are complex, nuanced issues best left to parents to discuss with their kids on their own terms, when they’re developmentally ready, not introduced by puppets during snack time. Preschoolers should be learning about sharing, kindness, and the alphabet—not navigating the intricacies of neo pronouns. Sesame Street’s push to indoctrinate kids under the guise of diversity, equity, and inclusion risks robbing kids of their innocence and parents of their autonomy. In the end, Gabe the Giddy Groomer might be better suited for a late-night cabaret than a sunny street where the air is sweet, and where kids learn about the ABCs, not BDSM. But fear not, parents! Next season's guest star is rumored to be DEI Donna, here to lecture toddlers about the intersection of critical race theory, white supremacy and climate change. Stay tuned!
